Little Used

So the entire state is under "widely scattered showers" advisory for the whole week, and while that makes for great sky shots, it does make for tricky shooting, as most electronic devices don't work well when soaked.

Yesterday I wanted to photograph boats and when I woke up, it was sunny. Well the trip to the nearest marina is nearly two hours away, and by the time I got there, the sky was threatening to unleash fury.

Fortunately it held off while I shot the following series. In fact, as I'd taken my last shot, put my lens cap back on my camera and was walking back to my car, done shooting for the day, it started the torrential downpour.

So special thanks to mother nature for playing nice with me.

Side note: I have a Nikon 10-20mm ultra-wide lens that I got for a good deal some years ago, but haven't used it much. I put it up for sale but so far have had no takers (it's an expensive lens.) Undecided as to what I was going to do with the lens, I brought it along with me for the day's pictures. What you see here in Black and White, are all shots done with this lens. I have found a purpose for it, it's really good at shooting boats, and bridges.

I may keep it after all. All the Black and White shots are from my Nikon D1x, it has a B/W shooting mode option, and I wanted to explore it further. I'm really like the effect.

Sunset

A bit of downtown and sky for the weekend. The sky graced me with interesting clouds and the traffic was light on the bridges. The water was low to expose an interesting rock formation and the weather was nice.

This has been adjusted in PhotoShop, to bring out the colours, but hopefully I've not overdone it.

Into the Storm

On Sunday, I went to a Flying Circus show. Great fun was had watching WW1-era biplanes swoop and loop and buzz around.

I was using my longest, sharp lens, a Tamron (eh, what an I say, I'm broke) 28-200mm at maximm length. I was initially concerned I'd not have enough reach and have to do a lot of cropping, but I am happy to say I didn't have to do that.

During the event, a storm swept in and although it skirted by, it did present some excellent background, as you can see here.

Evocation, Part 4

Last one of the bridge shots. I liked the way the dead tree intruded into the image. I was tempted to get into the water for some unobstructed shots but the water was moving too quickly for my tastes (not to mention that even though it was about 70 degrees on Jan. 1st, that water looked mighty cold)

I could not have asked for a better sky for these shots. Even the dead tree limbs were just about perfect.

It helped immensely that the sky was so interesting.

I like how this one turned out, almost like it was supposed to look like this. The water is blue, the sun just rising over the land and up into the stormy skies.

Never pass the 'is that real?' test of course, but better looking than the stock B/W one.

The sky really makes this image. After a while I'd gotten used to seeing rocks jutting from the landscape everywhere I went and trying to capture them in new or interesting ways was taxing. But when the clouds rolled in suddenly everything came together (cue Beatles music)
